This Month in Provincial History

NEW YORK — Some notable November events that took place around Holy Name Province:

One Year Ago
Nov. 1, 2008 — Fordham University recognized the ministry of St. Francis of Assisi Church in New York City and its partnership with the college at its third annual Sapientia et Doctrina Awards ceremony. The award was presented to Provincial Minister John O’Connor, OFM, and Jerome Massimino, OFM, pastor of St. Francis. (Last month, Archbishop Roberto Gonzalez, OFM, of San Juan, Puerto Rico, was honored by Fordham for his contributions to Hispanic ministry with the Sapientia et Doctrina Award.)

Nov. 23, 2008 — Archbishop Roberto Gonzalez dedicated a new altar at St. Francis of Assisi Church in New York. The altar was added during a summer restoration of the West 31st Street church.

Nov. 12, 1999 — Daniel McLellan, OFM, was formally installed as president of Washington Theological Union in ceremonies held at Nativity Church in Washington, D.C. (Today, Daniel is pastor and guardian of Immaculate Conception Church in Durham, N.C.)

Nov. 3, 1984 — St. Francis of Assisi Church in Triangle, Va., was blessed and dedicated by Bishop Richard Keating of Arlington, Va. Assisting him at the concelebrated Mass were Provincial Minister Alban Maguire, OFM, pastor James Schwantner, OFM, and Patrick Adams, OFM, who built the original structure — a school whose auditorium served as a church. Long-time pastor Angelus DeMarco, OFM, who built the new church, had died in August. (Shown in photo: Bishop Keating prepares to place the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle located in the chapel to the left of the main altar. With Bishop Keating are permanent deacon Richard Smith, second from left, and Patrick, far right.)

Nov. 27, 1969 — Friar missionaries in Bolivia hosted Thanksgiving dinner at the center house in La Paz, inviting Xavierians, Chicago Dominicans, Maryknollers, Resurrectionists and diocesan men from Paterson, N.J., Buffalo, N.Y., Boston, Rochester, N.Y., and Kansas City. The meal’s guest of honor was Giles Bello, OFM, who arrived in La Paz in mid-November for visitation.
