Two Friars To Lecture at Villanova’s Franciscan Series

VILLANOVA, Pa. — Two Holy Name friars will participate in a Franciscan lecture series at Villanova University here to commemorate the Order’s 800th anniversary.

Brian Jordan, OFM, of New York City, and Kenneth Himes, OFM, of Boston College, will participate in the series, titled “The Relevance of the Franciscan Tradition: A Celebration of 800 Years of Franciscan Contributions to Education, Spirituality, Peacemaking and Ecology.” In all, there will be six lectures from September through March.

The five-month lecture series at the Augustinian university was coordinated by Kathryn Getek Soltis, a former Franciscan Volunteer Minister and Catherine of Siena teaching fellow in ethics in Villanova’s Center for Justice and Peace Education.

The series opens at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 22 with Brian, above left, presenting on “Franciscan Contributions to Worker Justice.” At 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 29, Kenneth, a professor at Boston College, will speak about “Franciscan Traditions of Peacemaking.”

Others speakers include Br. Bill Short, OFM, of the Franciscan School of Theology and Graduate Union in Berkley, Calif.; Kevin Hughes, Ph.D., Villanova; and Sr. Ilia Delio, OSF, Washington Theological Union.

More information can be obtained from Soltis at 610-519-4498, Kathryn.getek@villanova.edu.
