Cardinal McCarrick Presides at NYC Ordination
Five friars were ordained to priestly ministry on May 24 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Manhattan. This was the largest group of HNP friars ordained in nearly 20 years.

Holy Name Friars Gather at SBU for ’08 Chapter
A new vision statement and strategic plan were approved last week at Holy Name Province’s Chapter at St. Bonaventure University. In addition, members of the 2008 - 2011 Provincial Council were elected.

Four Friars Profess First Vows
Four men professed their first vows at a festive Mass at St. Bonaventure University June 5 during the Province’s Chapter.

Francis Matthews Dies
A Mass of Christian Burial was held June 4 in Liverpool, N.Y., for Francis Matthews who died May 29.

Joseph Nangle draws on his years ministering in Lima, Peru, where he witnessed the rebirth of church, to write his book, Engaging Spirituality: Faith Life in the Heart of the Empire, released this spring.

Parishes Mark Feast of St. Anthony
St. Anthony bread and lilies are being distributed this week at St. Anthony Shrine in Boston, as it celebrates the feast of its patron saint at its annual street fair. Other parishes throughout the Province also are also marking St. Anthony’s feast day.

North Carolina Church Displays Images of Immigrant Challenges
After a visit to the Mexican border to see immigration issues through the eyes of immigrants, St. Francis of Assisi Church in Raleigh displayed photos from the trip.

SBU Names Alumnus as Associate Vice President
Lawrence Sorokes, who earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from St. Bonaventure University, has been named SBU's associate vice president for Franciscan mission and director of the Mychal Judge Center.

Holy Cross, the Bronx, Plans Farewell Celebration
As the friars prepare to turn over administration of Holy Cross to the Diocese of New York, parishioners have planned a farewell celebration for June 29.

Presbyterians Attend Day of Recollection at Province Church
The Center for Franciscan Spirituality and Spiritual Direction at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Manhattan offered a day of recollection and reflection in May to 26 members of the Presbyterian Ministers Association of New York.

Two Siena Students Spend Semester in Calcutta

St. Anthony Reflection: I Did It God’s Way
As a missionary, Anthony did not preach one sermon, convert one Moor, lose even one drop of his blood at Saracen hands. He failed in the most cherished goal of his life. But his failure did not leave him bitter, cynical or filled with self-pity. He realized God had other plans for him. Anthony’s challenge was to discover what God wanted, rather than what he wanted.

St. Bonaventure and Siena Graduate More than 1,500
Wishing the "goodness and peace of God" to 812 graduates, Siena College’s Kevin Mullen celebrated his first commencement since becoming president. At St. Bonaventure University, the keynote speaker thanked SBU for his corporate career success at Delta Airlines.

A long-time friend of the Province, Bishop Michael Saltarelli, was honored last month in Wilmington, Del.

Peace Activist Fr. Louis Vitale to Speak in NYC this Week
Franciscan Louis Vitale, founder of the Pace e Bene Nonviolence Service, and a well-known peace activist, speaks on “Say ‘No’ to Torture,” this week at Church of the Holy Name of Jesus in Manhattan.

Catholic Press Association Cites Book About Mychal Judge
Kelly Ann Lynch’s book about Mychal Judge’s life and work – He Said Yes – was recently named a first-place winner in the children’s book category of the Catholic Press Association’s annual awards.

Sacred Heart Chapter Elects New Provincial Minister
Friars in the Sacred Heart Province in the St. Louis/Chicago area, are meeting for their chapter this week. On June 10, they elected a new provincial minister and vicar.

St. John the Baptist Province Elects New Leaders
The province of St. John the Baptist elected a new leadership team at its chapter last month.
